We all just want to eat.
I few weeks ago, my husband and I decided to clean up our eating by trying the Whole 30. Basically, it is eating nothing but healthy protein and fat, along with lots of vegetables, for 30 days straight. I just love sweet things and cutting them out was not easy. I have to tell you, I was shocked and a little embarrassed by my feelings of being deprived when I sat down with a plateful of healthy food in front of me. In my head, I heard the familiar chorus “you are lucky to have something to eat…children in the world are starving” but a voice inside me kept screaming “just a little piece of chocolate…pleeeze!”
With each plateful of food I tried to imagine how, if I was starving, I would just be so grateful to have anything to eat. As we counted down the days, my imagination grew into real feelings of gratitude for my food.
I’ve been so lucky to never know true hunger. This little experiment in healthy eating got me thinking about how the sensation of hunger is something that can bond us together as humans. In our hearts, we all just want to eat.
